Principal Actors: Expectations and Responsibilities

  • Web Management Committee
The Web Management Committee serves as the library-wide advisory group for library web services.   The Committee is responsible for actively seeking feedback from staff and public users about the content and functionality of the UH Libraries website, identifying priority areas for development of web content, design, and management tools, consulting with content owners about major changes or additions to the website, creating and maintaining policies and procedures pertaining to web content, and ensuring that those policies and procedures are widely disseminated.
  • Head, Libraries Web Services Department
The Head of the Web Services Department is a member of the Web Management Committee and is responsible both for advising the Committee about issues that pertain to the UH Libraries website and for coordinating the activities of the Web Services Department in response to priorities identified by the Committee.   The Head of Libraries Web Services will take the lead in technology and policy development with respect to library web services.
  • Web Developers
The Web Developers report to the Head of Library Web Services and are responsible for the programming aspects of the UH Libraries website.   The Web Developers are the first point of contact for web-related Help Desk requests and, in conjunction with the Head of Library Web Services, are responsible for developing and maintaining web tools to support content owners.
  • Metadata Coordinator
The Metadata Coordinator is responsible for creating and maintaining keywords and descriptions for library web pages, as well as bibliographic metadata for licensed resources provided through the "Find Articles" database.   The Metadata Coordinator is also a member of the Web Management Committee.
  • ILS Coordinator
The ILS Coordinator is responsible for the technical aspects of the integrated library system shared by UH, UH Clear Lake, and UH Downtown.   The ILS includes a public web component, the UH Library Catalog, which has its own inter-campus advisory committee.
  • Content Owners and their Supervisors
Content Owners are responsible for updating their assigned pages to reflect changes in library services and, if necessary, developing new pages relevant to their areas of responsibility.   Supervisors and Department Heads have the responsibility to communicate service changes initiated by other departments and units that affect the content of pages under their own purview.   They also have the responsibility to communicate to the rest of the Libraries, in a timely manner, service changes initiated by their own department or unit.
  • Content Owners
They are also responsible for reviewing their assigned pages at regular intervals, and updating as needed.   The frequency of regular review will differ from page to page, and will be determined by the owning Department Head.   The regular review interval is not to exceed 365 days. It is the exclusive responsibility of Content Owners and their supervisors to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the web content under their purview.   The Web Services Department is not responsible for editing content, interpreting vague instructions, removing content that does not have a specified removal date, or otherwise providing quality control at the content level.

Staff Training

A training program will be put in place as the tools and templates develop, and as staff training needs become clearer.   The first step is the preparation of the present document, which will continue to grow and evolve.   Questions about how to create and edit Web content should be directed to the Head of Libraries Web Services.
